Grow Your Own

With our region’s declining and aging population base, it’s critical to focus on strengthening the workforce by upskilling existing workers and “growing our own” with a future pipeline of talent to replace retiring talent. Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! remains strategically committed to two key initiatives:

Apprenticeships

If your business is having trouble finding qualified talent with the skills and expertise you need to be competitive, apprenticeships are worth considering.

Apprenticeships are a centuries-old method of training new talent, but now you’ll find apprentices in far more than the skilled trades. They are happening in healthcare, human services, food and agriculture, information technology, education and more. Each program is unique.

Apprenticeships utilize a combination of on-the-job training with related classroom instruction through which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. Programs can be sponsored by individual employers, joint employer and labor groups, and/or employer associations.

Apprenticeships are proven to:

  • Reduce turnover

  • Foster greater loyalty

  • Increase productivity

  • Improve the bottom line

You and your company can take advantage of this recruitment and hiring strategy, and you don’t have to do it alone.

Michigan Works! provides resources and assistance in customizing an apprenticeship program that is right for you.

We help you navigate the steps to register with the United States Department of Labor. We may also be able to access potential funds to support your efforts. If you’d like to start a discussion about developing an apprenticeship program, contact our apprenticeship training coordinator to help facilitate the process.
